3 Objectives of Christian Counseling
- Seeks to help resolve the situation presented by the counselee.
- Seeks to help counselee prepare for certain situations (Prevention vs. Crisis)
- Seeks to apply God’s wisdom to situation.
Counselor as a motivator seeks to
- Understand root causes for their problems.
- Take responsibility for behavior and thought process changes that need to take place.
- Grow as a disciple of Christ.
Uniqueness of Christian Counseling
View of the world: We KNOW God, and utilize his power.
Goals: Experience forgiveness of God…give life to Christ, recognize sin, spiritual growth…live their lives according to Biblical teaching.
Methods: Blend between secular and Christian methods.
Working definitions of CULTURE:
- Integrated system of patterns, ideas, values and learned behavior.
- Institutions characteristics of a society
- Sum total of daily life developed a community and passed from generation.
Shared and Personal Culture:
Shared: Shared beliefs, shared way of life within immediate environment.
Example: Family culture, neighborhood, different social groups.
Personal: Acquired through parent’s environment…We have the personal choice to accept or reject it.

Gods love compels us to carry out our ministry
- Be available to all persons. - Focus on all areas of the person – physical, pshycological, social and spiritual. - Take into account sinful nature of man - Form Christian out of God’s likeness.
The Kingdom is the umbrella that unites all we do
-Care for the individual, family and community.
It is not just one part of the person, it is all parts.

1. God is already active in the counselee
a. Recognize that God is already working in the situation

2. Complex problems do not demand a complex solutions
a. Help the counselee to see the good in their life…this leads to the beginning of the solution.

3. Finding exceptions helps create solutions
a. Small change often leads to bigger changes.
b. Focus on solutions

4. The counselee is always changing
a. Celebrate changes; be intentional in recognizing these changes.
b. Some changes positive or negative might happen, we must recognize that we are not to carry it as a burden. God will take care of it.

5. The counselee is the expert and clarifies goals
a. Change comes from the counselee, we can guide them but we cannot make the choices for them.
b. They are the ones who need to establish their goals.

6. Solutions are co-created
a. Work on solutions together, BUT the counselee in the end needs to make the decision.

7. The counselee is NOT the problem, the problem is the problem
a. Even if the counselee might have gotten themselves into the situation they are currently in, they do not need “fixing”. They are not the problem.
