Test 1 Flashcards
Delimiting research
Statement about what the research is not going to do
Research Problem
Has important questions that are unanswered in a particular field
Operationalization
The definition of a characteristic or variable in terms of how it will be measured.
State the assumption
Reveals what the researcher maybe taking for granted with respect to the problem
Importance of the study
Must have a particular value or reason for undertaking the study
Good research example
Open to empirical investigation.
Stated in the form of a question.
Has relationship between or among variables
Null hypothesis
No consistent patterns in the data
Used primarily during statistical analysis
Variables
research investigation that has two more possible values
Dependent variable
Variables that depend on independent variable.
Mediating variable
Standing between independent and dependent variables
Moderating variable
Influence the nature of the relationship between IV and DV
Universality
The research project should be one that might be carried out by any competent person
Replication
The research should be repeatable
Nominal measures
Messages data by assigning names.
Ordinal measures
One object is bigger or better of anything then the other
Interval measures
Has equal units of measurement.
Ratio measures
Can express values in terms of multiples and fractional parts….characterized by equal measurement units (parentheses similar to an interval scale)
Validity
The extent to which a measurement instrument measures
Reliability
The consistency with which a measurement instrument yields a certain result when the entity being measured hasn’t changed
Issues and research assurance
I honestly would prefer colleagues.… Internal review board (IRB)… Protection from harm… Informed consent… Right to privacy…professional code of ethics
Purpose of qualitative research
Description… Interpretation… Purification… Valuation
Case study
To one person or situation in depth
Ethnography
Understand the culture of the group
Phenomenological
To understand participants points of view and their experiences
Grounded theory
To derive a theory from data collected in a natural setting
Content analysis
To identify the specific address sticks of a body of material
Conducting interviews
Identify some questions in advance… Sitter participants cultural backgrounds on their responses… Make sure interviewees are representatives of the group… Find a suitable location… Written permission… Don’t put words in people’s mouse… Record responses verbatim
