What was the Truman Doctrine?
help countries fight against Communism
What was the Cold War?
Fight against communism (Soviet wanted communism and to spread it, US and Soviet had a tense relationship following WWII, never really any fighting)
What did Truman do?
Sent aid to Greece and turkey in hopes of them not falling to communism, and established the Marshall Plan to help rebuild Europe
What was containment?
containing spread of communism
What was Domino Theory?
fear of communism spreading (Eisenhower)
What was public opinion during the Cold War?
Propaganda! Films, fictional books about spies, television and commercials
How did the Cold War end?
Soviet Union dissolved eventually in. The 80s, and communism dissolved away, US won because they were able to show their system could survive throughout war
What was the Vietnam War?
Fight against communism (North wanted all of Vietnam to be under communist rule)
What was the Geneva Accords?
an agreement that divided Vietnam into two zones, and US created a govt. in South Vietnam to prevent a communist takeover; the US did not sign or want to be associated with it (Eisenhower)
What was the Strategic Hamlet Program?
plan by South Vietnam and US to combat the Communist insurgency by means of population transfer
What was Gulf of Tonkin?
US ships were attacked, used this attack to get congress approval to go deeper in the Cold War
What did Johnson and Nixon want?
To keep US’s credibility and that meant not withdrawing from the war
What was the Nixon Doctrine?
support allies with supply military supplies
What was Vietnamization?
a policy to end US involvement in war, reduce number of US combat troops, and increase military supplies and South Vietnam forces involvement
What was US’s public opinion during Vietnam War?
Protests against war, music for the war EX: country Joe and the Fish, music for the war EX: Ballad of the Green Beret
