Test 1 Flashcards
What are the 6 characteristics of a Model according to Mosey?
- Description of professions philosophical assumptions 2. Ethical Code 3. Body of Knowledge/ Theoretical Foundations 4. Domain of Concern 5. Aspects of Practice 6. Professions Legitimate Tools
Mosey’s Tools of the Trade in OT
- Non-Human Environment 2. Conscious Use of Self 3. Teaching and Learning Process 4. Use of Purposeful Activities 5. Activity Groups 6. Activity Analysis and Synthesis
What is the model?
Almost universally accepted by the practice. It is the overarching ideas that OT’s have on themselves and what they do.
What is the theory?
Predicts relationships. Cannot be used directly in practice.
What are the 3 Parts of Theory?
Concepts Definitions Postulates
What are the Concepts of a Theory?
Category of event/phenomenon that have common characteristics. A concept is a general notion.
What are the Definitions of a Theory?
Defining the characteristics of a concept. Describing the concept.
What are the Postulates of a Theory?
If/Then statement. A statement that shows the relationship between two or more concepts.
What is a frame of reference?
The link between theory and practice Very specific to a topic, illness, condition, etc.
What are the five parts of a FOR?
Theoretical Base Function-Dysfunction Continuum Indicators of Function-Dysfunction Continuum Postulates Regarding Change Application to Practice
What are the five parts of the theoretical base in a FOR?
Assumptions Concepts Definitions Postulates Hypothesis
Describe the function-dysfunction continuum?
Can determine where a client is in the continuum based on details in the FOM. States explicitly what is “functional” and “dysfunctional”

Describe the indicators of function-dysfunction
Describes specifically how you can tell if a person is functional, dysfunctional or where they would lie on the spectrum by giving examples of the outliers.
Describe Postulates Regarding change
Really moving to practice in this stage.
What you should be doing to have the client move toward change.
Guideline for problem mediation.
What does Gary Keilhofner believe make up the profession of OT?
Paradigms and Conceptual Models of Practice
What are paradigms?
Our unique prospective of the field. How we share our vision.
What are the 3 parts of a paradigm?
Core Constructs: Area of expertise = similar to domain of concern. =Practice Framework
Focal Viewpoints: We all have a viewpoint that we all agree with. A commonly shared viewpoint in the field.
Integrating Values: We hold values to our profession. Similar to Mosey’s Ethical Code!!
What is a basic scientific theory and when is it used?
Basic Scientific Inquiry: ——> People Developing Theories
For the people that are developing theories.
What is Applied Scientific Theory
Applied Scientific Inquiry —–> People Developing Frames of Reference
Develop frames of reference.
What is the Top-Bottom Approach?
Find out who they are and what they like to do. THEN find out what is keeping them from doing it.
What is the Bottom-Up Approach?
Find out what is the problem. (Ex: the person has a missing appendage) they can’t use their arm. THEN find out why they want to use their arm!
Explain the difference between purposeful activity and occupation
“Purposeful activity refers to goal-direered behaviors or tasks … that the individual considers meaningful” Purposeful activities have personal meaning combined with a goal-directed quality and are encompassed within occupations but may not be based on occupation.
An occupation is the daily life activities in which people engage.
Florence Clark says….
We are a discipline because we develop our own theories. We are a discipline because we are our own science. The science of occupation. We need to do more of our own research.
What are the 4 levels of activity in Occupation Based Intervention?
- Adjunctive: ex: passive ROM, heat pack,
- Enabling: Preparatory Activities
- Not occupation based or purposeful but gets them ready to participate in activity.
- Simulated activities. (peg-boards, theraputty)
- Prepares them to do purposeful and then occupation.
- Purposeful: Have a purpose but may not be based in an occupation that is meaningful.
- Occupational: Actually participating in the occupation.
