Behavioralists
Studied the behavior of humans
Definition of psychology
Psychology is the scientific study of the behavior of organisms (and mental
processes/experiences)

Self Fulfilling Prophecy Part 1
You will see what you want to see
Self Fulfilling Prophecy Part 2
Your results will change your behavior and the behavior of others
Parts of an experiment
Question, Hypothesis, Independent Variable, Dependant Variable, Control and experimental groups, Data Collection and Analysis
Parts of a Journal Article
Abstract, Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Discussion, Results and Conclusion
How many groups must there be in an experiment
At least 2
Independent Variable vs Dependent Varaible
Independent variable is what is being changed and the dependent variable is what is being measured
Ways of selecting sample groups
Random and representational
Different errors during a study
Time sequence error, systematic and random errors
Double Blind Study
The people conducting the experiment do not know what group is the experimental and the control group
Correlation error
Two things are related but does not mean one thing caused the other ex. increase in ice cream sales and increase in murder
Confounded independent variable
unintentionally introducing multiple variables and are unsure what caused the results
Operational definition
a clear and detailed explanation of how to measure and define a variable ex. tallness
P value
measures the probability of obtaining the observed results, assuming that the null hypothesis is true. .05 or less is statistically significant.
Mean
Average
Median
middle
Mode
most reoccurring
Experimental research
Only way to get facts and truth
Ethics and deception
Experimenter must decieve people in order to conduct the experiment. Is it ethical to give one group a drug and the other a placebo?
