Explain Holistic Approach to Health, safety, and nutrition.
A holistic approach involves health being the inter-relationship among our physical, emotional, and social well-being. A holistic approach considers the development of all these areas (physical, social, emotional, mental well-being) necessary for overall health and well-being.
What is wellness?
Historically wellness was defined as an absence of disease. This perspective is changing – emphasis on the whole person.
Good health includes proper weight, exercise, good nutrition, controlling risk factors, emotional/mental wellness
Everything you think/feel/do and believe influences wellness
Health and safety responsibilities of an ECE
-Primary responsibility is to keep children safe and healthy.
-Have knowledge and adhere to all current and relevant health regulations. Following regulations from Durham Region Health Dept. And CCEYA
-Able to identify potential or immediate hazards in childcare setting
-Role-model good safety/hygiene practices and explain them in a way children understand.
-Up to date First-Aid and CPR Training, know what to do in a fire procedure.
-Must be able to recognize signs of abuse (physical, sexual, emotional and neglect) in kids and report it to Children’s Aid Society.
-Providing healthy balanced snacks/meals and promoting children’s physical health and well-being by understanding their nutritional needs.
-Recording children’s daily food intake
-Being aware of toxins in the childcare environment in the form of building supplies, detergents and play materials that could harm them.
-WHMIS Training is legally required for all employees exposed to a hazardous material/controlled product at work
Staff-to-child ratios
Infants younger than 18 months – 1 staff to 3 infants, 3 staff to 10 infants
Toddlers 18 - 30 months – 1 staff to 5 children, 2 staff to 10 children, 3 staff to 15 children.
Preschoolers 30 months - 6 years - 1 staff to 8 children, 2 staff to 16 children.
Kindergarten 44 - 68 months – 1 staff to 13 children, 2 staff to 26 children.
Primary/junior school age – 68 months - 13 years – 1 staff to 15 children.

Sleep Hygiene
- Positive sleep is longer sleep durations/better quality of sleep, and screen free bedrooms. (regular bedtime, consistent routine)
-Having screens in bedrooms is linked to less sleep
-There are sleep apps to help you sleep better (Headspace, Calm, etc.) and YouTube visuals with sounds, calming videos etc.
Benefits of Physical Activity for Children
-Strengthens the heart, maintains flexibility, builds strong muscles and bones, promotes good posture, coordination and balance, enhances healthy growth/development, maintains a healthy weight.
-Greater self-efficiency, pro-social behaviour, self-esteem and life satisfaction.
Sun Safety
-Children sunburn easily, so sunscreen is to be put on 30 mins before outdoor play and reapply if outdoors for a few hours.
-Hats are mandatory but sunglasses are suggested.
-Shade on the playground is required.
-Sunscreen is not recommended for children under 6 months but there are brands available for them.
-Water should be accessible prior to, during, and after outdoor play.
Child-proof a room in a childcare center
-Cover electrical outlets with proper CSA approved covers.
-Keep blind cords out of reach of children
-Active Supervision
-All equipment to be kept in a safe/clean condition and kept in good condition of repair.
-Strollers are not blocking exits, entrances, and flow of traffic.
-The exit, cubby area, passageway to outdoor play area to be wide enough for children to gather and/or change footwear.
-Sweep walkways regularly.
-Trimming low branches to prevent eye damage or face scratches.
-Repair uneven joints in outside walkways to prevent tripping.
Role of ECE regarding children and physical activity
-Supervision and Observation
-Provide DAP where an ECE nurtures a child development
-Assist in skill development
-Encourage social play (group play and participation)
-Rotation of materials/equipment
Outdoor time per day
-2 hours at least of outdoor play for kids 30 months or older who are in attendance for 6 hrs. or more in a day
-Under 30 months and in attendance for 6 hrs. or more in a day, up to 2 hours in outdoor play weather permitting.
Typical injuries in Childcare
Bumps, bruises, abrasions (causes by colliding with other children/furniture/walls/doorways.
Burns/scalds (caused by hot foods/liquids)
Bites from other kids or insect bites.
Falls is the leading cause of serious injury
Injury Prevention
-Active and safe supervision – having appropriate adult to child ratio
-Safe Space environment – knowing the kinds of physical layouts that invites kids to run
-Developmentally appropriate programming/activities - children’s ages/abilities determine play patterns and daily routines rather than those who adjust to a fixed program.
-Preventive Policies and procedures – safety strategies that are communicated to staff, families and children (adhered to everyday).
Playground Injuries
-Playground injuries most happen in summer (43%), fall (27%), spring (24%), and winter (6%).
-It can happen on any playground including community parks, school playgrounds.
-Overall boys are injured more than girls (63% males vs. 37% females)
-For playground injuries, boys have a slightly higher risk than girls (53% males vs. 47% females).
-Children ages 5-9 years have the highest risk as they have the most exposure.
Safety for children during mealtimes
-Sit with children – encourage conversation/enjoyment, don’t rush meal routine, and encourage them to stay seated.
-Encourage children not to speak with food in their mouth, ECES SHOULD MODEL THIS
-Encourage children to chew before swallowing.
-Spoons for toddlers, and forks for preschoolers,
-Know allergies and food restrictions.
