New world found vs Created
New world found talks abt the literal findings of a new world in America by Europeans. For puritans like Winthrop it was also land given to them by god
New world created refers to the mission to build a new society based on puritan values. This is seen as when Jonathan WInthrop talks about building a city on the hill. a model community that would be an example for the world.
How does John Winthrop show a new world being created in his sermon
He shows a new world being created in his sermon by laying out a vision of the puritans. He emphasizes the connection they have with God’s covenant and declares their mission as divinely inspired. In addition, Winthrop plans on creating a society of love and charity as the rich must help the poor and be charitable and to donate. This is the mission tasked by God, thus everyone must see it as he says “City on the Hill” as they will be watched by the world and judged by God
How is Huswifery Puritan
Puritans believe that every aspect of life even the most bland tasks should be aligned with God. In huswiferies case, Taylor uses many metaphors about spinning wheels to represent his devotion to God. In addition, Huswifery talks about weaving his soul in order to be worthy of Gods salvation, which is something emphasized by many puritans. Also Huswifery uses plain tools to convey complex puritan ideas furthering the belief that every aspect should be seen as devotion to God
How does Cotton Mather connect the covenants in his essay
As a puritan, one of their major beliefs was the need for salvation. Thus, Cotton Mather’s writings constantly reference covenants as a foundational puritan theology. This is best seen when Mather talks about the Covenant of works and covenant of Grace. They are tied together by gods plan of salvation. He views the covenant of works as the foundation for understanding human sin. Adam, humanities role representative, broke God’s covenant thus condemning humanity to sin, death, and seperation from God However due to God’s kindness, he intervened and created the Covenant of Grace, where individuals were allowed to obtain salvation through predestination. However you must have both in order to reach salvation.
