Value Imposition
Refers to counselors directly attempting to define a client’s values, attitudes, or beliefs
Tolerance for Ambugity
the degree to which a therapist is comfortable with uncertainty, unpredictability, conflicting directions, and multiple demands. Tolerance for ambiguity is manifest in a person’s ability to operate effectively in an uncertain environment.
Countertransference
Taking personal issues as a therapist and projecting them on to the client
3 Areas of Multicultural competency
Awareness of own beliefs and biases; knowledge; and intervention strategies
Mandatory Ethics
Involves a level of ethical functioning at the minimum level of professional practice
Aspirational ethics
Focuses on doing what is in the best interest of clients; involves high standards of thinking and conduct
Fear-based ethics
Performative ethical behavior for fear of consequences; does not constitute sound ethical practice
Concern based ethics
Concern for patients and concern to be practitioner
Positive ethics
An approach taken by practitioners, who want to do the best for their clients, rather than simply meeting minimum standards to stay out of trouble
Informed consent
Involves the rights of the clients, to be informed about their therapy, and to make autonomous decisions pertaining to it; ethical and legal requirement, that is an integral part of the therapeutic process
Confidentiality
An ethical concept around a clients right to privacy, and what information can or cannot be disclosed and when; in most states, it is the legal duty of therapist not to disclose information about a client
Privileged communication
Legal concept that protects clients from having their confidential communications revealed in court without their permission
Instances in which a counselor legally must report
When therapists believe a child under the age of 16 is the victim of incest, rape, child abuse, or another crime; when therapist determines client needs hospitalization; when information is made an issue in court action; with clients request the records to be released to them or third party
Privacy
The constitutional right of individuals to be left alone and to control their personal information
