Test 1 Flashcards
Receptor
A cellular protein that binds a hormone, also a structure that detects a stimulus.
Half-life
How much time it takes for the blood concentration of a hormone to be reduced to half of the original amount released.
EPO
Erythropoietin, A hormone that is produced by the kidneys, increases the rate of production and maturation of erythrocyte.
progenitor cells
stem cells that then further differentiate to create specialized cell types.
Infundibulum
allows for hormones synthesized in the hypothalamus to be sent to the posterior pituitary for release into the bloodstream
Agglutination
Blood clumping, the process that occurs if an antigen is mixed with its corresponding antibody.
Diapedesis
When white blood cells go through endothelial cells and enters the blood stream.
Chemotaxis
Process that attracts white blood cells or leukocytes to a specific area.
Centrifuge
A tool used to separate the plasma, buffy coat, and the erythrocytes.
Hemopoiesis
The production of formed elements in the blood.
Hemoglobin
The red pigmented protein in erythrocytes that transports oxygen and carbon dioxide
Erythrocyte
Red Blood Cells, transport oxygen and CO2 within the blood.
Leukocyte
White Blood Cells, contribute to defending the body against pathogens.
Megakaryocytes
Stick themselves through the blood vessel walls, as blood is flowing it will cut pieces off then forming platelets.
Vasoconstriction & Vasodilation
Vasoconstriction is when blood vessels will constrict when the body is cold and Vasodilation is when the body is hot.
