Test 1 Flashcards
Atoms
Smallest unit of matter that still retains chemical properties of an element
Compounds
When atoms combine with other atoms. Chemical bond.
Covalent bonds
Two atoms share electrons
Ionic bonds
Electrons are fully transferred between two atoms
Ion
When the total number of electrons is not equal to the total number of protons
Cation
A type of ion with a positive charge
Anion
A type of ion with a negative charge
Ionic compound
Metal + NonMetal
Molecular compound
Nonmetal + Nonmetal
Chemical reaction
Atoms of one or more substances are rearranged to for a different substance.
Physical property
Characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the substance
Chemical property
characteristic of a substance that indicates whether it can undergo a certain chemical change
Physical change
a change in size, shape, or state of matter, substance DOES NOT change identity when it undergoes a physical change
Chemical change
a change in one or more substance to another substace
Law of conservation mass
Mass of all substances present before a chemical change equals the mass after the chemical change
