Allusion
A direct or indirect reference. Could be literary, biblical, or even historical.
Anaphora
Repitition of the same word or phrase in the beginning of successive clauses or phrases. “We shall fight in the trenches. We shall fight on the oceans. We shall fight in the sky.”
Anecdote
A brief story or tale told by a character in a piece of literature.
Apostrophe
When a person, thing, or abstract quality is addressed as if present or alive. “Come on turn green” “ Grandma come back I miss you”
Asyndeton
The practice of omitting conjunctions between words, phrases, or clause giving it a more extremeous effect. “ He was brave, fearless, afraid of nothing.”
Colloquial
Slang based on the text/ time period.
“Whet”
Epigraph
A quote set at the beginning of a literary work or at its division to set the tone or suggest a theme
Euphemism
Substitution of a milder or less direct expression for one that is harsh or blunt
Epistrophe
A type of repitition at the used at the end of the same sentence
Synecdoche
A part represents a whole
Thesis
Premise statement upon which the point view or discussion in the essay is based
Tone
Reflects the narrators attitude
Transition words
Words and devices that bring unity and coherence
Metonymy
A figure of speech that replaces the name of a thing with the same name of something else with which it is closely related
Mood
Feeling or ambience resulting from the tone of a piece as well as the writer/narrator’s attitude and point of view
