Holy Week
The week preceding Easter and begins on Palm Sunday. Holy Thursday celebrates the mass of the Lord’s supper. On Good Friday we remember Jesus’s passion and death. On Holy Saturday we eagerly prepare for the Easter Vigil. Concludes with the Easter Vigil.
Liturgical Year (When does it begin?)
It begins at advent.
Roman Missal:
This is the book the priest uses at the altar and at his chair. It includes all the prayers of the Mass
Ordinary Time:
It is called the ordinary times because its days are numbered with ordinal numbers. There are two blocks of Ordinary Times in the liturgical calendar. The first takes place between the Christmas season and Lent.
Liturgical Colors/meaning and significance:
Purple; waiting – Advent
White and gold; Joy – Christmas
Green; hope – Ordinary Times
Purple; penance – Lent
White and Gold; joy – Easter
Deposit of Faith:
Our tradition that was handed down from Christ to the Apostles to us - unchanging. An example is any of the Sacraments.
Opus Dei:
Meaning the work of God in Latin. The sacrifice of God’s son.
Liturgy:
The Church’s official, public, communal prayer. It is God’s work in which The People of God participate. The Church’s most important liturgy is the Eucras.
Trinitarian:
The Church’s liturgy is trinitarian meaning the Three Divine Persons( The Father, Son and Holy Spirit) are at work.
Icon:
An icon is an image of Jesus, Mary or one of the Saints. Greek word meaning image.
Holy Spirit:
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the trinity. The Holy Spirit is active in liturgy, preparing us to encounter Christ. It is represented by a dove or fire.
Origination of Liturgy and Sacraments:
Comes through scripture and tradition. Handed down from Christ.
Magisterium
The Churches living teaching office, Which consist of bishops, and communion with the Pope
Ritual:
An established pattern of actions usually including words and action for a ceremony that is repeated often.
