What are the categories of a bomb or terrorist related incident?
- No warning - device actuated
- Warning given - device actuated
- Warning given - device not actuated , made safe.
Regardless of what criteria the call falls into, we must….
- Think - secondary devices
- Think - Safe cordon distance
- Think - Safety!! Do not touch
What are the minimum distance restrictions on radios on the fire ground?
Appliance and main scheme radio 50 M
Hand held radios
10 M
If for operational reasons , it is necessary for an appliance to approach within 50 M what must be done first? And why?
Radio should be switch off to avoid both speech and data transmission.
What are the minimum cordon for a suspect package?
- 100 m - suitcase
- 200 m - car/light vehicle
- 400 m - HGV/Lorry
Before siting appliances / committing personnel into an area, consideration must also have been given to:
- Not in direct line of sight
- Away from glass
- Away from secondary hazards (parked vehicles, garages etc.)
- Behind hard cover
- Upwind if any suspicion of chemical or biological agent.
- Beware secondary devices
- Request police if not already in attendance.

Facing away from the IED with the windows open.
What appliances do we have that can be used during a terrorist related incident? And what can they be used for?
Aerial appliances
• Can be used to overview the scene by LAS and Police for evidence and information gathering.
• Can be used to ensure no casualties have been missed due to them being blown or walking wounded from scene.
