Terrorism Flashcards
Political cause
Nationalism:
This means that some groups will use terrorism as a way of fighting a state that oppresses them or doesn’t let them be an independent nation. People may feel that they cannot achieve independence peacefully and turn to violence and terrorism to achieve their nationalist goal.
Political cause
Retaliation:
This means that some groups or people will commit violence as a response to harm they believe to have suffered. An individual or a terror group may seek revenge for what they see as unjust attacks against them, their culture or their religion.
Social cause
Religion:
A group may use religious justification, often corrupting the beliefs of a religion to justify violence and terror. It can come from a literal interpretation of their holy books or believing their religion is being oppressed.
Social cause
Discrimination:
If a person or a group from a particular religious or racial or ethnic background faces discrimination, this can lead to a feeling of isolation. These individuals or groups might become resentful of the society that discriminates against them and launch terror attacks in response.
Economic cause
Poverty:
When faced with extreme poverty people can get desperate and angry with those they blame for their situation and commit terror attacks as a way of protesting and demanding more support.
Economic cause
Financial gain:
Some terror groups use violence, extortion and kidnapping as a way of making money to fund their terror attacks. They do this to instil terror but also to raise money to fund their attacks.

Lose access to education:
Terrorism sometimes target girls in schools or universities. For religious reasons some groups believe girls should not be allowed to go to school. To prevent girls from going to school these terror groups will attack schools in order to scare families from sending them to school.

Increase in police cooperation:
Because terrorism is a global issue so countries need to increase cooperation between their police. Many terrorist organisations are multi-national meaning that they recruit from across a variety of counties. Because of this, information regarding potential terrorist threats must be shared between counties.

Refugees:
Terrorism can have an impact on different countries because they will have to deal with refugees coming from countries more affected by terror groups. Many people try to escape the threat of terrorism and cross the border into other countries which have to provide shelter.
