Defined as groups of rocks constrained by fault inferred as having same geological history, geological history incompatible with surrounding rocks.
Terranes allow us to link regions stratigraphically using isotopic data, palaeomagnetics and Biostratigraphy enabling us to reconstruct movements of the crust in the past, redefinition because of advancements in field, new means of correlating Terranes
North cordillera Terranes defined by different tectonostratigraphical records. Some Terranes from same place tectonically but different places, Terranes liable to move and links made to Terranes far apart.
Key to classification is establishing geodynamic setting of Terranes and potential linkages with neighbouring Terranes as terrane boundary evolve with time
