Terrain Flight Flashcards
What are the terrain flight modes?
Low level
Contour
Nap of the Earth
Terrain flight is 200 AHO and below
What is NOE?`
Nap of the earth is conducted at varying speeds as close to the earths surface as possible, 25’ AHO and below
What is contour flight?
Flight at low altitudes conforming to the earth’s contours. Relatively constant airspeed and varying altitude. 25-80’ AHO.
What is low level?
Performed at a constant altitude and airspeed, dictated by threat avoidance. 80-200’ AHO
What considerations are made for PZ selection?
Number, size, obstacles, location, conditions, wind, approach/departure routes
What considerations are made for LZ selection?
Location, capacity, alternates, threat, obstacles, identification, approach/departure route, number of LZs
What are the route planning considerations?
METT-TC
Enemy situation, terrain, and environmental conditions are the most important
Must be tactically sound and conducive to successful navigation
What is an ACP?
Air control point that is an air reference easily identifiable point of terrain or NAVAID used for navigation, communications, command & control. Usually at a defined change in direction or anything deemed for timing
Should be 5-20km apart
RP and SP are 3-8 km from PZ/LZ
What is a contact point?
The position in which the mission leader makes radio contact with a controlling agency
What is the primary map for planning and flying?
JOG 1:250,000
How is a hard time annoted?
00:00:00
How is a soft time annoted?
0000
How is an elapse time annotated?
00+00+00
What are the hazards to terrain flight?
Physical
Weather
Human
What are the physical hazards to terrain flight?
Objects that could actually come in contact with the flight.
Manmade: buildings, bridges, towers, other aircraft, WIRES
Natural: trees, birds, ambient light
