Terpenes and Steroids Flashcards
What is a terpene?
member of a broad class of compounds built from isoprene units with a general structure of (C5H8)n
How are terpenes classified?
by the number of isoprene units they contain
What is squalene?
triterpene made from six isoprene units that is biosynthetically used in the manufacturing of steroids
What is a terpenoid?
functionalized terpene
What does it mean to be a functionalized terpene?
functionalized with other elements such as O, N, and S
What structure do all steroids have?
basic tetracyclic ring system
What steroid is an important component of the cellular membrane?
cholesterol
How do we acquire cholesterol?
from the diet and from synthesis in the liver
How is cholesterol carried through the blood?
in lipoproteins
What are two major examples of steroid hormones?
testosterone
estradiol
How do steroid receptors “work”?
can easily diffuse through the cellular membrane and will bind to receptors inside the cell
