Books of Hours

Linear Perspective
relative size, shape, and position of objects are determined by drawn or imagined lines converging at a point on the horizon
Sfumato
the technique of allowing tones and colors to shade gradually into one another, producing softened outlines or hazy forms
Atmospheric Perspective
how the atmosphere influences how distant objects appear; ex: further away, less clear
Humanism
seeing life and human nature as it actually is
Chiaroscuro
the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition
Coextensive Space
bridging of the space of the image and the space of the spectator; sharing the same area
Quadratura
a illusionistic decoration in which architectural elements are painted on walls in such a way that they appear to be an extension of the real architexture
Quadro Riportato
the italian phrase for “carried picture” a part of the overall composition is painted illusionistically to look as if it is framed easel painting hung overhead
Di sotto in su
extreme foreshortening of figures painted on a ceiling or other high surface so as to give the illusion that figures are suspended in are above the viewer

creating works as close to reality as possible

aesthetic attitude and art style based on or reiterating themes, techniques, and subjects or art from ancient greece and rome
High Baroque
around 1625 to 1700 and is characterized by grandeur, richness, drama, and elaborate ornamentation
Vanitas
a type of still life art that includes symbolic objects to remind the viewer of their mortality and the worthlessness of worldly goods and pleasures
Tenebrism
darkened and obscuring; significants details such as faces and hands are illuminated by highlights
