Cultural capital
Refers to one’s knowledge of established and exalted cultural activities
(Can sometimes hinder its a double edge sword)
Whiteness
White racial domination normalized
Eurocentric curriculum
The curriculum making European history and culture central to American history
Freedom
To really be free you need to know yourself, Culture and history, and have self mastery. Education is central to freedom
Social captial
Refers to who you know and the resources available through that network
Familism
This is a type of social capital referring to your reliance on and relationship with your family
Tracking
The way schools track students “according” to their ability
Ap/honors, college preperstion, vocational, remedial
Oppositional culture
Idea presented by John ogbu that nonwhites resist certain white culture things to avoid feeling stereotyped. Or that they are giving up who they are.
Stereotype threat
Claude Steele and Joshua Aronson studied this threat that makes people afraid to conform to their stereotypes
Burden to succeed
Asian Americans are considered the model minority and feel pressure to succeed
