Peace Power
- Capacity to be in harmony with others & with the earth.
- Uses collective energies towards a future
- Feminist Ideal
- Don’t deny values associated w/ power, but its how you achieve your goal individually/group and how you get there TOGETHER
Power Over
- Hiarachy, one person imposes their will on someone else
- Can apply sanctions if they oppose
- One people have power over get caught up and behave as if any measure is necessary to retain that power and is justifiable.
Empowerment
- facilitating & enabling someone to develop and use the tools they need to do for themselves
- growth of personal strength, power and ability to enact one’s own will
- love for self and respect for others
- grows from active engagement with others with shared values
3 processes before empowerment can occur
- respectful
- trusting relationships
- willingness to accept change, communication, negotiating skills, willingness to surrender or transfer power, personal capacity for growth, self-determination…autonomy, power, influence, participation in decision making.
Oppression
- Discrimination backed up by structural/systemic power
- Based on concepts from the cycle of oppression
Power
- capacity & ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or events
- There are 3 kinds (structural, societal/cultural, political & economic)
Stereotype
negative, exaggerated belief, fixed image or distorted idea held by persons/groups/economic decision makers that is embedded in and reinforced by oppressive power relations
Powerlessness
Lack of power, strength, effectiveness
Prejudice
A way of thinking based on stereotypes
Discrimination
action/inaction based on prejudice
-made possible or implicitly/explicitly by oppressive power relations
Vulnerability
An individual or community is somehow more prone to experiencing health inequalities
Intersectionality
Interaction of impacts of various forms of oppression related to various groups
Generalizations
Allows for little to no individual difference or social variation between persons
Marginalization
to put/keep a person or group in a powerless position within society (ex: homeless population)
Awareness
- Active, growing knowledge of self and others and the world
- means turning into the moment and valuing your own influence (being aware and exposing barriers that create inequality)
