Cranial, superior, rostral
Something closer to the head or higher then another structure in the body. Excluding limbs
Anterior, ventral
Anterior preferred, refers to a structure being more front then another structure in the body
Posterior, dorsal
Posterior preferred, refers to a structure being more back then another structure in the body
Medial
Not synonymous with “median”. Refers the a structure closer to the median plane then another structure
Proximal
Limbs only, refers the a structure being closer to the median plane or root of limb then another structure
Distal
Limbs only, refers to a structure further away from the median plane or root of the limb then another structure
Caudal, inferior
Not used for limbs. Refers to a structure being closer to the feet or lower part of the body then another structure
Superficial
Related to a reference point on the chest wall. Refers to a structure being closer to the surface of the body
Deep
Related to a Reference point on the chest wall. Refers to a structure being further away from the surface
Ipsilateral
Means on the same side as reference point
Contralateral
Means opposite side of reference point
Lateral
Refers to a structure further away from the median line then another structure
