Alexander the Great
Macedonian general for whom Cleopatra’s city Alexandria was named.
Aeneas
The founder of the city. He believed that it was his duty (from the gods) to found Rome. He spent time with the Carthaginian queen Dido, but he eventually left her. She cursed him forever.
Alexandria
One of the cities over which Cleopatra ruled. It very easily outshone Rome, and it’s grandeur was one of the reasons why Caesar fell in love with Cleopatra.
Appian Way
One of the earliest and strategically most important Roman roads of the ancient republic. It connected Rome to Brindisi, Apulia, in southeast Italy.
Vercingetorix
Leader of the Gauls during the Gallic Wars. He was defeated by Caesar in the Battle of Alesia. He was held prisoner for 5 years. After five years, he was paraded through the streets and executed.
Troy
City in Greece in which Rome considered itself like. Troy was master of the Mediterranean, similarly, Rome was too.
A Triumph
A parade through the streets after a victory. A slave usually accompanies the victor and reminds the victor that he is still human .
Tribune of The People
Representative of the plebeians in the senate. Examples are the Gracchī brothers
Tarquinius Superbus
The last King of Rome. Was exiled after the Rape of Lucretia.
Augur
A person who read signs from nature (particularly the behavior of birds) and could determine whether or not things were going well.
Alesia
The battle at which Caesar defeated the leader of the Gauls, Vercingetorix.
Boudica
The queen of the Iceni tribe who resisted Roman imperialism.
John Wilkes Booth
Lincoln’s assassinator. He believed that Lincoln was acting tyrannical, and shouted “sīc semper tyrannīs!” as he killed him. He was seen as a modern day Brutus.
Zama
The Battle of Zama. 2nd Punic War. Scipio Africanus defeated Hannibal in Zama, a city in Carthage.
Vesuvius
Volcano that erupted in Pompeii.
