Terms For Atoms Flashcards
Atom
The smallest part of an element made up of protons, neutroms and electrons
Atomic number
The number kf protons (equal to number kf electrons) sometimes called proton number
Compound
A pure substance made up of two or more elements chemically bonded together in fixed positions
Diatomic element
Two atoms with the same atomic number that are chemically bonded, for example an oxygen molecule (O2)
Electron
A tiny particle with a negative charge. Electrons orbit the nucleus of atoms or ions in shells
Electrnic structure
A set of numbers to show the arrangment of electrons in there shells
Element
A pure substance that is made up of only 1 type of atom
Groups
Verticle columns (named 1 to 7 and 0) in the periodic table are called groups. The number of electrons in the outer shell of the atom can tell you what group it is in
Mass number
The number of protons plus neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Mixture
An impure substance made up of two or more elements not chemically bonded
Molecule
A small group of atoms covelantly bonded
Neutron
A dense particke found in the nuckeus of an atom. It is electrically neutron and has no charge
Nobel bases
Unreactive gases found in group 0 in the periodic table. They have a full outer shell
Nucleus (of an atom)
The very small and dense central part of an atom that contains protons and neutroms
Period
Horizontal rows on the periodic table are called periods. The period corresponds to the number of occupied shells in atoms of the element
