Terms for an Oceanographer Flashcards
Geological Time
Geological Time accounts for for the movements of the earth over vast stretches of time. Most of the movements or changes have occurred very slowly and are measured in millions of ears
Decompression Diver
A decompression chamber is an enclosed space that ocean divers must use to reduce the effects of pressure on their body after a deep dive
Hot Spot
A stationary area of volcanic activity.
Echo Sounding
Echo soundings measure the depth of a body of water.
Mantle
The mantle is located beneath the earth’s crust
Marine Geology
Marine geology is the study of many aspects of the ocean floor, including topography, formation of the floor, minerals, and fossils.
Mid-Ocean Ridge
The mid-ocean ridge is an undersea mountain range that is thousands of miles long
Plate Boundary
The Earth’s crust is made up of a series of plates that float above the mantle. A plate boundary is the edge of a plate
Topography
Topography relates to changes in elevation of the ocean floor. The topography of the ocean floor includes mid-ocean ridges, trenches, continental slope, and other unique aspects of the ocean floor.
