Protestant Reformation
a religious movement begun by Martin Luther in 1517, which objected to a variety of Catholic processes and practices, including the sale of indulgences.
Counter-Reformation
a religious movement within the Catholic church initiated by Pope Paul III at the Council of Trent in 1545. Sought to root out financial abuses and corrupt bishops and priests, while attracting new adherents by connecting with them emotionally.
Trivium
three streets that converge in a piazza. An important urban design element replicated in plans throughout the world.
Loggia
a passage or gallery colonnaded on one or both sides
Baroque:
Extravagant style of art and architecture that flourished in Europe from the early 17th through the late 18th century. Used contrast, movement, exuberant detail, grandeur, and surprise to create a sense of awe.
Lantern
a superstructure on a roof, such as a dome or tower, that is encircled by windows that allow light to enter
Bavarian Rococo:
an architectural style that emerged from out of the Baroque in Bavaria, fusing the exuberance of Bernini with the lightness and mathematical rigor of Borromini.
