hole in one stroke
ace
the possition you assume before hitting the ball or setup. a player has done this when he has taken his stance and has also grounded the club, except that in a hazard a player has done this to the ball when he has taken his stance
address
any counsel or suggestion that could influence a player in determining his play, the choice of a club or the method of making a stroke
advice
a shot to the putting green
approach shot
the grass around the putting green that is shorter than that on the fairway but not as short as that on the green
apron
the ball that is farthest from the hole after all players have hit
away
the second group of nine holes on an 18-hole course (holes 10-18)
back nine
a ball is “in play” as soon as the player has made a stroke on the teeing ground. it remains in play until it is holed, except when it is lost, out of bounds or lifted, or another ball has been substituted, whether or not the substitution is permitted; a ball so substituted becomes the ball in play.
ball in play
a small object such as a coin used to mark the position of the ball on the green
ball marker
a score of one stroke less than par on any hole
birdie
a score of one stroke more than par on any hole
bogie
the amount of curve a ball has when it rolls after being putted on a slope
break
a hollowed out area on the course, most often filled with sand, designed to catch errant shots
bunker
someone who carries a player’s clubs
caddy
the distance the ball travels in the air.
carry
any temporary accumulation of water on the course usually caused by heavy rain that has not had time to drain
casual water
a short approach shot to the green. it travels farther on the ground than in the air.
chip shot
when the clubface is facing left of the target
closed face
when the golfer’s stance is aligned to the right of the target
closed stance
the striking surface of the club.
club face
the committee is the committee in charge of the competition or if the matter does not arise in a competition, the committee in charge of the course
committee
the playing area determined by the committee
course
a piece of turf taken from the ground during a swing
divot
a bend in the fairway
dogleg
score of 2 strokes more than par on any hole
double-bogie
a score of three strokes under par on any hole
Double-Eagle
a shot that curves slightly to the left
draw
a shot hit with a driver from the teeing area
drive
number 1 metal club, most often used from the teeing area as the first shot on a hole and usually travels the greatest distance of any club (sometimes over 300 yds)
driver
the act of dropping a ball according to the rules of golf, usually because it is unplayable as is; often incurs a penalty.
drop
a score of two strokes less than par on any hole
