Osteoblast
A bone-forming cell
Osteocyte
A mature bone cell surrounded by bone matrix.
Osteoclast
A large, multinucleated cell that breaks down bone.
Hematoma
A mass of blood that is confined to some limited space.
Callus
A mass of tissue that connects the end of a broken bone.
Anatomical Position
The position acquired when one stands erect with the feet facing forward, the upper limbs hanging at the sides, and the palms facing forward with the thumbs to the outside.
Trabeculae
Beams of bone in Cancellous bone that form the latticework.
Osteons
Compact bone arranged in tightly-packed cylinders.
Central Canal
A hollow tube in the middle of an osteon in which blood vessels run through. Sometimes called Haversian Canal
Concentric lamellae
Tubes of bone that surround blood vessels that run through central canals
Interstitial lamellae
Layers of bony tissue that do not form complete cylinders.
Sutures
Tight immovable joint between bones
Syndesmosis
Fibrous joints that connect bones that are farther apart.
Synchondrosis
Joints made of hyaline cartilage such as the epiphyseal plate and the strips of cartilage that attached the ribs to the sternum.
Symphysis
Bones joined by fibrocartilage such as the symphysis pubis which joins the coxal bones and the intevertebral disks.
