Absolute Music
Instrumental music without pictorial associations. Titles usually refer to genre, tempo, of form of piece. Classical era trait.
ex: String Quartet in C major
Affections
Baroque Philosophy referring to emotions in a piece. Usually in baroque, we see one affection, or one clear emotion, portrayed throughout a movement.
ex: La Primavera
Answer
Second statement of main theme in a fugue. Usually in dominant key.
ex: Prelude and Fugue in B flat major
Aria
Solo song for solo voice and accompaniment found in operas, oratorios, and cantatas.
Ex: Carmen
Art Song
Musical setting and portrayal of a poem, usually performed by solo voice and piano accompaniment.
ex: Erlkonig
Atonality
Lack and absence of a tonal center, resulting in dissonances.
Ex: Prelude a l’apres midi d’une faune
Ballet
Highly stylized type of dance, interpreting a story. Developed in the 17th Century.
ex: Rite of Spring
Baroque
Originates from the Portuguese word, barocco, meaning a misshapen pearl. Used to be a derogatory term for the overly ornate art of the era, but now we use it to refer to the art, architecture, and music of the 17th and 18th century.

Basso Continuo
Baroque performance practice involving two performers. One plays the notated bass line while the other realizes a harmonic framework based off of the figured base.
ex: La Primavera
Binary Form
Two part structure, AB
Both Parts repeat
Section A usually ends with an open cadence in the dominant or relative major key.
ex: Prelude in B flat major
Chamber Music
Music for small ensemble, generally no conductor, one part per player.
Changing Meters
Shift in metric groupings caused by a change in time signature.
ex: Prelude a l’apres midi d’une faune
Choreography
Art of designing dance movements and steps for a ballet.
Ex: Rite of Spring
Col legno
Method used by Berlioz.
Indication for players to start tapping strings with the wooden part of the bow on their string instrument.
Ex: Symphonie Fantastique

Extensive us of notes outside of the key signature for increased emotion. Romantic era.
