Plot
The Main struggle or problem in a story
Conflict
The portion of the story following the climax, in which the conflict is resolved.
Resolution
When the narrator is one of the main characters and tells the story; this point of view uses “i”
First person point of view
When the narrator is not a character and talks about the main characters as ‘he’ or ‘she’
Third person point of view
A person or personalities in a story.
Character(s)
A comparison using “like” or “as”.
Example: The star was like a diamond sparkling in the night sky.
Simile
A comparison WITHOUT using “like” or “as”
Example: The wind was a knife cutting through the waves.
Metaphor
The emotion of the work, created by the author
Mood
Something that represents something else
Symbolism
The overall message conveyed by the author
Theme
When human qualities are given to non-human objects or nature.
Personification
A vivid description of something, writing that appeals to the sense of taste, thought, sight, sound, or smell.
Imagery
An abrupt ending of a chapter, novel, movie, or play where the character is left in a difficult situation and the reader is on the edge of her seat.
