Normative Need
what a person requires in order to attain a level of well being that meets the established standards of their community/culture
Perceived Needs
the requirements that individuals believe they must have in order to achieve an acceptable level of well being
Expressed Need
is the need which they say they have and use
Relative Needs
the acceptable level of need compared to other people requirements
Protective Factors
personal, social, and institutional factors that promote personal competence and successful development that decrease the likelihood of a problem occuring
Approach - Approach Conflict
occurs when we must choose between two equally positive or attractive goals
Avoidance - Avoidance Conflict
occurs when we must choose between two equally negative or unattractive goals
Approach - Avoidance Conflict
occurs when a single goal has both positive and negative qualities
Double Approach - Avoidance Conflict
occurs when we have to choose between two goals that both have positive and negative qualities
Paradoxical Intervention
prescribing the very symptom the client wants to resolve
Assessment
gathering and assessing multidimensional information about the clients situation
External Locus of Control
believe their successes or failures results from external factors beyond their control ( ie. luck)
Internal Locus of Control
believe their successes or failure is a result of the effort and hard work they invest
Cognitive Distortion
ways our mind convinces us of something that isn’t really true
Social Learning Theory
an individual learn from observing others
System Theory
an individual is in constant interaction with their environment
Reliability
dependability, stability, consistency and predictability of results and allows users to get the same answer repeatedly
External Validity
whether the results can be generalized
Internal Validity
whether there is confidence in cause and effect
Program Evaluation
the systematic assessment of the outcomes of a program with the attempt of furthering its development and improvement
Comorbidity
when one person carries more than one diagnosis
Double bind
a person is confronted with two demands that are impossible to meet at the same time
Provisional Diagnosis
the first considered diagnosis given to a patient
Absolute Poverty
inadequate income and assets, a person cannot maintain a subsistence level of income
Accommodation (Piaget)
modification of existing cognitive thought to incorporate new knowledge
Acculturation
assimilation to a different culture, typically the dominant one
Activities of daily living (ADLs)
ability/inability to perform ADLs, part of person’s functional status
Additive Empathic Responding
emphatic responses that reach beyond the true aspects and surface feelings of a client’s message to also reflect its implied content and underlying feelings
Advance Directive
legal document through which an individual makes their wishes know about health care decision
Agoraphobia
Fear concerned that escape may be difficult/help will be unavailable
Alcohol Withdrawal
alcohol induced disorder, symptoms from reduction of alcohol consumption: nausea, hand tremor, anxiety, seizures, insomnia
Alpha (level of significance)
the probability of rejecting the null hypothesis when it is true
Ambivalence
contradictory emotions that occur at the same time within a person
Anaclitic Depression
withdrawal, depression, and development delays resulting from the loss of an attachment figure during infancy
Analogue Studies
studies conducted in an artificial setting (ie. lab)
Androgyny
having mannerisms, behaviors, appearance, and other characteristics of both genders
Anhedonia
inability to feel joy or express many pleasurable emotions
Antecedent
event of other stimulus that comes before a behavior and is thought to influence it
Anterograde Amnesia
a loss of memory for events and information subsequent to a trauma or other event that precipitated the amnesia. Involves the inability to form new memories
Aphasia
impairment in the production and/or comprehension of language
Appropriate Affect
a person is in touch with their emotions and can express them as they feel in response to specific emotional or situational stimuli
