Elements needed for a computer to perform useful tasks?
Hardware, software and the user
Hardware
Devices and components that make up a computer system. Can be parts contained in the case or connected to the computer (peripheral devices)
Peripheral Devices
Things connected to the computer – printer; keyboard, mouse, etc. They allow info to be input (entered) and output (retrieved)
OS
Operating System – basic software environment that allows the computer to run
Applications
Software installed with the OS to extend the range of what the computer can do – word processing, excel, etc
Interface
Software/Hardware used by the user to control the computer system – keyboard, word processing
RAM
Random Access Memory
CPU
Central Processing Unit
Workstation
type of PC housed in a case – also called desktop PC or desktop. Can be used by a single user or as part of a network client to access shared resources
Computer Performance is determined by?
Speed of the CPU, System memory, Hard drive storage capacity, optional components (like sound card/webcam), and quality of peripherals (mouse, keyboard, etc)
Ergonomics
The comfort with which the user can use the computer or device
Server
Any computer providing services to other computers. Usually a powerful computer that supports a number of users simultaneously. Can refer to either hardware or software
Fault tolerant
Servers that use extra copies of components for redundancy and high quality components
Laptop
Integrates display, system components and input/output devices into a single portable case
Main Features distinguishing laptop
Size and weight, display type, input devices, power source (run on battery), components (different RAM and graphics), networking capabilities (wireless connectivity)
OEM
Original Equipment Manufacturer – companies that out source components (CPU, RAM) from other manufactures to use in their product
IoT
Internet of Things – a world where many different things are embedded with processing and networking functionality – cars, washing machines, birthday cards
Home Automation
software allowing a “smart” device to be controlled via the Internet – thermostats, security systems, IP Cameras, appliances, streaming media
Hub
the heart of the automation to which other devices connect – usually voice controlled using voice recognition or smartphone apps – Alexa, Siri, etc
UAV
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
