Terms Flashcards
Biodiversity
Used to describe the variety of life on Earth
Environment
The conditions that surround any living organism which can be living and non-living
Species
A group of interbreeding organisms whose offspring are fertile
Population
Group of organisms of one species is in an ecosystem
Producer
A green plant which makes food by photosynthesis
Consumer
An organism that cannot photosynthesise and needs a ready-made food supply
A herbivore
Animals that feed on plants only
Carnivore
Animals that eat other animals – flesh eater
Omnivore
Animal feeds on plant and animal material
Predator
An organism that hunts another organism. Typically are only carnivores or omnivores
Prey
An organism that is hunted by predator. This organism must have the ability to move (plants cannot be hunted)
Food chain
Shows how Energy is passed from organism to organism in a single chain within an ecosystem
Food web
Shows how energy is passed from organisms to organisms between all the organisms in an ecosystem
Habitat
Where plants and animals live
Community
all populations of different organisms in that habitat
Ecosystem
Community of plants, animals, microorganisms and where they live
Niche
Is the role that an organism plays within a community.
Inter-specific competition
Competition between organisms of different species
Intra-specific competition
Competition between organisms of the same species
Grazing
An animal which feeds on grass
Biome
Is a large region of the Earth that can distinguished from other biomes by:
The characteristics abiotic factors that affect it, such as climate
The particular animal community and plant community that it possesses
