Mood
A state or quality of feelings at a particular time
Analogy
A comparison or similarity between two things hat are alike in some ways
Personification
The attribution of human nature to inanimate objects
Synaesthesia
Production of a sense impression
Onomatopoeia
The formation of a word by imitation of sound
Pun
Humorous use of a word
Hyperbole
A dramatic exaggeration that is not meant to be taken literally eg. I’ve got a stack of work a mile high
Anecdote
A short amusing story about a real person or thing
Repetition
A word or phrase which is used repeatedly
Metaphor
A direct comparison between two things
Stanza
An arrangement of a certain number of lines forming a division of a poem
Simile
A comparison between two things using like or as
Tone
The atmosphere of a certain character or place
Assonance
When two or more words repeat the same vowel sound but start with different consonant sounds
Cliché
A phrase or idea that is used so often it has little meaning
Oxymoron
A figure of speech which is self-contradictory eg. Pretty ugly
Enjambment
The continuation of a sentence without a pause beyond the end of a line
Free Verse
A poem that does not use patterns or rhyme
Alliteration
The repetition of the same letter or sound at the beginning of several words eg. words of wisdom
Ambiguity
A word or phrase that has more than one meaning
