Terms Flashcards
Where is CSF housed?
subarachnoid space
Conus Medullaris
most inferior, “cone-shaped” portion of spinal cord
Filum Terminale
“terminal thread”; strand of fibrous tissue that extends inferiorly from apex of conus medullaris; anchors spinal cord to vertebral column
Cauda Equina
“horse tail”; bundle of spinal nerve roots below conus medullaris; exits vertebral column via anterior & posterior sacral foramina after which it forms different plexuses to innervate the limbs
Contractility
ability to shorten & generate force
Excitability
ability to receive electrical stimulus & generate AP
Elasticity
ability to return to resting length after having been lengthened
Extensibility
ability to stretch back to resting length
Twitch
single minimal stimulus
Tetanus
maximum force resulting from repeated stimulation
Fatigue
decline in muscle ability to maintain constant force of contraction in the face of long-term repetitive stimulation
