Terms Flashcards
Atom
smallest whole particle that exists, the building blocks of all substances
Molecule
made up of atoms. chemically bonded together. size and shape = very important to way they behave
compound
chemical compounds —> formed atoms join together in chemical reaction. properties of compound from elements that make them up
mixture
contains 2+ more substances. no chemical reactions takes place when mixture is formed. Easily separated
proton
positively charged sub-atomic particle found in the nucleus of an atom. Stays the same number in ions. Shown in periodic table as atomic number
Element
All matter —> made up of elements. Substances can’t be broken down.
Neutron
Particles presented in nucleus of atoms. Have mass —> BUT NO CHARGE
nucleus (atomic)
tiny centre of an atom. Made up of protons and electrons
Electron Shell
the shells around nucleus in atom where electrons placed.
eg. 2,8,8 … fill from inside to outside
Electron configuration
description of how electrons are arranged in atoms and ions. Can be shown as numbers or diagrams
Atomic number
Number of protons in nucleus
mass number
total no of protons and neutrons in atoms. isotopes change it, so can’t work it out from p. table.
ion
a charged particle formed when atom gains / loses electrons to create a full outer shell
Group
Column on p. table. Can also work out using last number in electronic configuration. (no. electrons in last shell)
period
row on the periodic table.
