Terms Flashcards
Template
A view with some pre-set instruments, settings, sends, and effects. Can be good for starting things fast and avoiding kick drum limbo
Multiple Outputs
Aka multiple sends. Can be used for effects that can be applied to different tracks (reverb and delay for example). This reduces the total pressure on the system. Can also be used to route different sounds in a drum set so that volumes can be adjusted in the mixer.
Side Chain Compressor
A compressor that activates when another track gets to a certain level of loudness.
Ducking bus
Using side chain compressor to compress according to a muted track or bus with output in a specific pattern. This can be used to get a pulsing sound.
Summing stack
Can put patches, smart control on a summing stack but not a folder track. Summing stacks can be used as stem stacks to make room for vocals (apply channel EQ to the stack), in cases where the vocal range is too crowded with instruments. Can also use for two of the same track that have different effects or mikes on them.
Folder stack
Basically just a way to group tracks - cannot apply effects to folder stack. For this reason, summing stack may be more useful.
Unity gain
At a level where input equals output. This results in less distortion, and greater range for microphones.
Parallel compression
Increasing low volume signals by basically doubling up on them. For the parallel tracks, fast-attack compression used on louder signals.
Bypass
Commands the track to bypass/ignore something.
Compression ratio
The extent to which a signal above the threshold is squashed. A 2:1 ratio squashes the signal to half of its size following hitting threshold, etc. A ratio above 20:1 is considered limiting, as the output level after threshold becomes flat.
Downwards compression
Reduces the output of louder signals. This does impact the sound/distort.
Drum fills
Small sections of drums used for transitions or variety. Can do 7 bars of regular drums and then a fill.
Swing
Adds tiny delays to every other note in order to get a more human sound. Especially useful for percussion instruments.
Using loop when recording
If you record on loop, the track will only record into the loop (I think)
Feedback
Where output comes back as input to create a sustained sound.
Crossfeed
Blending left and right audio signals to produce a less separated, natural sound. The intensity which each signal is routed to the opposite side. In speakers, this blending naturally occurs. It does not happen in headphones however, hence crossfeed. In tape delay, is used to transfer feedback of left side to right side.
Stereo Delay
Like Tape Delay, but can set the Delay, Feedback, and Mix parameters separately for each side
Channel strip settings
Can be saved via “Setting”
Drum vs. percussion
All drums are percussion, but not all percussion instruments are drums.
LFO
Low frequency oscillation. A secondary oscillator that operates on a lower frequency than the primary oscillator (which creates the audio signal). This can modulate another signal without adding something new into the mix.
