Terms Flashcards
Carry blood away from the heart to other organs
Arteries
Medium sized arteries divide into smaller arteries called
Arterioles
As the arterioles enter a tissue, they branch into numerous tiny vessels called
Capillaries
Groups of capillaries within a tissue reunite to form small veins called
Venules
Blood vessels that convey blood from the tissues back to the heart
Veins
The movement of substances between blood and interstitial fluid
Capillary exchange
Factors that affect blood flow
Hemodynamics
Volume of blood through tissue in mL/min
Blood flow
Average of blood pressure in the arteries; one third of the way between the diastolic and systolic pressures
Mean arterial pressure
Highest pressure attained in the arteries during systole
Systolic blood pressure
Lowest arterial pressure during diastole
Diastolic blood pressure
Factors that affect blood pressure
Cardiac output increase, resistance- how hard to push fluid through space, blood volume- force inc volume in space (increase pressure)
Opposition to blood flow due to friction between blood and the walls of blood vessels
Vascular resistance (peripheral resistance)
Larger diameter>lower resistance
Smaller diameter>higher resistance
Lumen diameter (part of determining peripheral resistance)
Increase viscosity, increase resistance
Decrease viscosity
Decrease resistance
Blood viscosity (part of determining peripheral resistance)
