Beijing Platform for Action
1995 Beijing conference- focus on: women’s empowerment/full and equal participation • public and private spheres • “The Platform for Action reaffirms the fundamental principle set forth in the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action, adopted by the World Conference on Human Rights, that the human rights of women and of the girl child are an inalienable, integral and indivisible part of universal human rights.” See slide from March 13 for strategic objectives and actions
Political asylum
the protection granted by a nation to someone who has left their native country as a political refugee
Non-refoulement
Our legal obligation to not send refugees back to the place where they are being persecuted- People have the right to political asylum
Survival migration
concept of forced migration- forced form homes due to economic circumstances, etc
Internally displaced persons
man made or environmental disasters, stay in same country
Migrants (vs. refugees)
Migrants- better socio economic conditions- chose to move vs Refugees- fleeing persecution- forced out
Dublin Regulation
Member states responsible for examining asylum claims is the first state of entry by asylum seeker- Aimed to prevent “asylum shopping”, people choosing where to go, multiple applications, etc-
Schengen Area
Area of EU with passport-free movement
Respect, Protect, Fulfill framework
Respect- state will not interfere w enjoyment of right- state not a violator, Protect- take steps to ensure others do not interfere/violate hr, Fulfill- promote, facilitate, provide. Proactively engage in activities that strengthen access to and realization of hr
Protect, Respect, Remedy framework
Twist on respect, protect, fulfill- State duty to protect against hr by 3rd parties (incl businesses), Corporate responsibility to respect hr, Greater access by victims to effective remedy
Global Compact
2000- Voluntary initiative- To encourage business worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies and to report on implementation
John Ruggie
Appointed as special representitive to the UN in 2005 for business and HR, wrote about protect, respect, remedy and guiding principles

Human rights due diligence
Assessment phase (Consider country context, consider impact of own activities, consider impact of relationships), Action (Integrate findings, track effectiveness of response, communicate)
