plot
the action of a narrative or drama
tone
the attitude of a writer, usually implied, toward the subject or audience
irony
use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning; or, incongruity between what is expected and what actually comes
verbal irony
when words express something contrary to truth or someone says the opposite of what they really feel or mean.
situational irony
irony involving a situation in which actions have an effect that is opposite from what was intended, so that the outcome is contrary to what was expected.
dramatic irony
inherent in speeches or a situation of a drama and is understood by the audience but not grasped by the characters in the play.
mood
emotional atmosphere of a work
flashback
insertion of an earlier event into the normal chronological order of a narrative
simile
comparison of two things using like as or other specifically comparative words
theme
a central idea of a work
internal conflict
struggle occurring within a character’s mind
external conflict
struggle between a literary or dramatic character and an outside force such as nature or another character, which drives the dramatic action of the plot
rhetoric
the art of presenting ideas in a clear, effective, and persuasive manner
imagery
The use of figures of speech to create vivid images that appeal to one of the senses
metaphor
A direct comparison of two different things
syntax
The manner in which words are arranged into sentences
short story
a story with a fully developed theme but significantly shorter and less elaborate than a novel
compound sentence
a sentence with more than one subject or predicate
