Abduction
Movement out to the sides - away from the middle of the body.
Aberrant Behaviour
Behaviour that deviates markedly from what’s considered typical.
Acclimatization
Introduction of variety of sensory stimuli with the goal expanding a persons preference.
Acute Back Pain
Back pain that has rapid onset, severe symptoms, and is short in duration.
Adduction
Movement towards the middle of the body.
ADP
Adaptive Device Program- Ontario program designed to subsidize the acquisition of adaptive equipment.
Age Appropriateness
Belief that person with developmental disabilities should be treated in accordance with their chronological age.
Aggression
Physical and verbal hostility directed towards others.
Aggression Stage
Crisis intervention stage which the person become verbally destructive and belligerent.
Agitation Stage
A crisis intervention stage marked by a noticeable change is the persons behaviour.
Alignment
Arranging or positioning the body in a straight line with the shoulders, hips, knead and ankles directly above one another.
Ambulation
The act of walking.
Antecedent
A preceding event, condition or cause.
Anterior
Toward the front of the body.
Aerophagia
Self injurious behaviour which involves the excessive swallowing of air.
Arthritis
Inflammation of the joints.
Aspiration
Taking food, liquid or any other foreign substance into the lungs
Astronaut Syndrome
Morning backache caused by fluid filled discs.
Asymmetry
Difference between two sides of the body.
Ex: the relative position or muscle tone.
Ataxia
Irregularity of muscle action and inability to coordinate voluntary muscular movement.
Ex: wide base, staggering gait.
Athetosis
Repeated involuntary movements that are purposeless but are often associated with deliberate movement.
ATNR
Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex - an automatic act in which turning the head sideways caused extension of the arm and leg on the side of the body in which face is turned and flexion of the arm and leg on the opposite side of the body.
Atrophy
A wasting away or reduction in the size of a cell, tissue muscle, organ or body part.
Aversive Intervention
Treatment method pairing a noxious stimulant with an undesirable behaviour in an effort to decrease the frequency of the behaviour.
