Terms Flashcards
Dissolve meaning:
When a solid spreads out evenly within a liquid and appears to “disappear”.
Solvent meaning:
The liquid part of a solution.
Solute meaning:
The solid part of a solution.
Solution:
What is formed when a solid is dissolved in a solvent.
Saturated Solution:
When no more solute can be dissolved in a solvent.
Filter:
Acts like a sieve to separate a liquid and a fine solid (solid not dissolved)
Filtrate:
Whatever passes through the filter.
Residue:
The material which is too big (particles are too big) to pass through the filter.
Evaporate:
When a liquid changes into a gas.
Boil:
When a liquid has enough energy for particles to break its surface tension and evaporate.
Crystal:
Solid whose atoms are arranged in a regular pattern.
Crystallise:
To form crystals from a solution.
Pure Substance:
When a substance has no other substances dissolved in it.
Fractional Distillation:
Separating more than one liquid, using the fact that they have different boiling points.
