Hypoxia
A condition in which the body or a region of the body is deprived of adequate oxygen supply.
Cervical Effacement/Ripening
Thinning of the cervix.
Succenturiate Lobe
A placenta which has two or more lobes separate from each other.
Velamentous Insertion
The umbilical cord is not directly inserted into the placenta, but is attached to a vein which is then attached to the placenta.
Gestational Thrombocytopenia
A fall in platelet numbers which occurs during pregnancy.
Pre-Eclampsia
A condition which develops in pregnancy which is characterised by high blood pressure, headaches, proteinuria and fluid retention.
Lochia
Uterine discharge which occurs 2-6 weeks after labour.
Low birth weight of newborn baby
2.5 kg or less.
Parity
Number of live babies born.
Gravida
Number of pregnancies.
Oedema
Excess fluid.
Asepsis
The prevention of contact with microorganisms.
Erythema
Skin redness.
Hypovolaemia
Abnormally low circulating blood volume.
Fundal height at the xiphisternum
36 weeks.
