Policy promising aid to countries fighting to maintain democracies. A.K.A. fight communism.
Cold War
Conflict between the U.S. and the USSR (Soviet Union) following WW2.
Potsdam Conference
Allies’ meeting in Potsdam, Germany to plan the end of the war. (WW2)
The Berlin Airlift (Blockade)
When the Western powers (U.S., Britain, France) decided to unite their sections of Germany into one as West Germany, Stalin feared that West Germany would threaten the Soviet Union, so he decided to take action.
Marshall Plan
U.S. plan developed by George C. Marshall to help boost the economies of European nations after the war, and to spread democracy.
NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created in 1949. It was a military alliance that included Canada, the U.S., and 10 European nations.
Warsaw Pact
Equivalent to NATO, an alliance between Soviet Union, and Eastern European nations.
containment
Policy to stop the spread of communism.
Mao Zedong
Leader of the Chinese Communist Party

Line of latitude dividing North and South Korea.
Korean War
Conflict involving U.S.-led UN forces against North Korea and China.
General Douglas MacArthur
Leader of the UN force in the Korean War.
Dwight Eisenhower
Winner of the 1952 presidential election because of his promise to quickly end the war.
John Foster Dulles
Eisenhower’s secretary of state, announced brinkmanship.
