Vizier
Head of the Ottoman bureaucracy, often an advisor to the Ottoman sultan
Sail al-Din
14th century Sufi mystic who began a campaign to purify Islam. Followers were called Red Heads.
Abbas I, The Great
Safavid ruler who expanded the empire to the largest it ever was. Incorporated Western military advancements into his empire.
Isfahan
Capital of the Safavid empire from 1592 to 1629. Located in modern day Iran.
Babur
Founder of the Mughal dynasty who took control of Northern India and brought India under his control.
Din-I-Ilahi
A new religion created by Akbar in Mughal India. Combined Islam and Hinduism to try and unite the groups, but failed.
Nur Jahan
The wife of Jahangir. Gained power of the court and put her family members into power.
Sikhs
A religious sect in NW India. Tried to unite Muslims and Hindus but failed due to Mughal persecution of Muslims.
Mehmed II
Ottoman sultan who conquered Constantinople and ended what remained of the Byzantine empire.
Suleymaniye Mosque
A beautiful mosque that was the stamp of Suleimans rule and the peak of the Ottoman Empire. Built from 1550 to 1557.
Isma’il
1487-1524. Sufi commander who conquered city of Tabriz. First Safavid to be named shah. Founded the Safavid empire.
Imams
Worship leader in a mosque, considered leader of the Muslim community.
Nadir Khan Asfar
1688-1747. A soldier and explorer following the decline of the Safavid dynasty. Named himself shah.
Humayan
Son and successor of Babur. Brought Mughal back to rule.
Sati
An Indian ritual where a widow was supposed to commit suicide on her husbands grave after he passed.
Aurangzeb
Mughal emperor, know for his strength in religious beliefs.
Janissaries
Ottoman military sect that was the head of the Ottoman armies. Also had a strong political influence.
Safavids
Conquered and established their kingdom in Iran, supported by Shi’ites.
Chaldiran
Site of battle between Safavid and Ottoman Empire, Safavids were defeated. Prevented Safavids from Western exploration.
Mullahs
Local mosque officials and prayer leaders.
Mughal Dynasty
Established by Babur in India. One of the longest lasting empires in history, established in 1526.
Akbar
1542-1605. Son and successor to Humayan. Built military and administrative systems. Made a new religion to try and bind Muslims and Hindus.
Taj Mahal
Originally built as a burial chamber for the wife of Shah Jahan, Mumtaz Mahal. Mughal India.
Marattas
Western Indians who rebelled against the Mughal empire in the 18th century.
