Terms Flashcards
What does the heart do?
Pumps blood.
What are the three types of blood vessel?
- Arteries
- Capillaries
- Veins
What does an artery do? Give their general info.
They carry blood away from the heart (most carry O2 blood; only the pulmonary artery carries CO2 blood.) They are very elastic and strong, and if cut, blood squirts, with great pressure. They branch into arterioles.
What are the diseases of the arteries? Explain. (List three.) Are they dangerous combined? Why / “ not?
- Atherosclerosis-when cholesterol builds up inside of arteries and narrows them
- Arteriosclerosis- the plaque (cholesterol build-up) hardens and becomes brittle
- High blood pressure
The three combined are capable of leading to heart attacks/strokes ( a ‘brain attack.’)
What does a vein do? Give their general info.
They carry blood to the heart (most carry CO2 blood; only the pulmonary vein carries O2 blood.) Walls are thinner, not so elastic. Valves prevent backflow of blood.
State the three facts that we’re supposed to know about the capillaries from the review sheets.
They are microscopic. Their walls are one cell thick, which allows osmosis to take place. There is virtually no blood pressure in them.
What is blood? How much blood does an adult have?
Blood is a liquid tissue which carries substances around the body. An adult has 6 quarts of blood, which is about 24 cups.
What is the name for the upper chambers of the heart?
Atrium (sing.)
Atria/Auricles (plur.)
What is the name for the lower chambers of the heart?
Ventricle/s
What kind of blood does the right side of the heart carry?
A bluish-red blood rich in CO2.
What kind of blood does the left side of the heart carry?
A bright red blood rich in oxygen.
What is the septum? What happens when there is a hole in it?
The septum separates the right and left sides of the heart. When there is a hole in it, the complexion of the baby is blue.
What is the definition of circulation?
The movement of “things” around the body.
What do the valves do?
They control the flow of the blood in the heart.
What is the largest artery called?
The aorta.
