Terms Flashcards
What is a Roentgen ?
Unit of exposure to x or gamma radiation per kilogram of air
What does a curie measure ?
Used to measure radioactivity.
What is radiation absorbed dose (RAD)?
Absorbed dose in any substance
What is Roentgen equivalent man (REM)?
Absorbed dose in body tissue in terms of biological effects
System Internationale ?
Set of interrelated measurement units
Becquerel
Measures radioactivity. Formerly the curie. 1 disintegration in 1 second
Gray
Formerly the RAD. measures absorbed dose in any material. 100 RADs
Sievert
100 REM. absorbed dose in human tissue.
X Rays
High energy photons
Stay time
Amount of time calculated to assure that personnel exposure do not exceed at a predetermined level
Bremsstrahlung
“Braking radiation”. Exclusively beta Rays. Interactions between positive nucleus and negative betas or electrons
Excitation
When charged particles exert force on atoms and raise orbital electrons to higher energy states, but not enough to completely remove them from the atom. They emit photons when returning to ground state.
Ionization
Occurs when charged particles exert a sufficient force of attraction or repulsion on orbital electrons to completely remove one or more electrons form atom
Ion pair
The positively charged atom from which the electrons were removed and the removed electrons.
Photons
Bundle of pure electromagnetic energy, have no mass, no charge, and are indirectly ionizing
