Another name for a polymeric molecule, huge molecule
Macromolecule
What is the smallest unit making up a polymeric molecule?
A Mer
The structure inside the parentheses is the styrene unit, the repeat unity of the polymer. The small subscript n means the molecule is repeated.
-(-CH2-ĆH-)n-
One Mer- one part of the many that make up a polymer; the chemical that is polymerized to make a polymer chain.
Monomers
Every unit is bonded on the other side with the same unit resulting in a chain of styrenes – ex. Styrene unit
Repeat unit
The chemical process of monomers reacting with each other to form a polymeric chain
Polymerization
The two or more monomers are distributed randomly with no particular pattern.
Random copolymer
The two or more monomers in this polymer are distributed in a perfectly repeating pattern
Perfectly alternating copolymer
A compound with far fewer monomer units in a chain than a polymer; it has a much lower molecular weight compared to a polymer
Oligomers
All monomers in the polymer chain are the same; if the monomer were styrene, the homopolymer would be named polystyrene.
Homopolymer
Describes every type of polymer except homopolymer; two or more different types of monomers make up the chain; three distinct distributions can take place.
Copolymer
Polymer molecules shaped like a star.
Star-shaped molecule
Polymer of three polymers; considered a copolymer.
Terpolymer
Polymerization of four polymers; considered a copolymer. Not the same as a quatermer which had four mers and is an oligomer
Quaterpolymer
Are not only dependent on a polymers chemical composition, but also structure of the polymer molecule
Properties of polymers
