Terms Flashcards
Properties of a muscle
Contractibility, excitability, extensibility, elasticity
Functions of the muscular system
Movement, posture, respiration, body heat production, communication, constrictions of organs of the heart, contraction of the heart
Skeletal muscle
Attached to bone, long and cylindrical, multiple nuclei, has striations, voluntary and involuntary (reflexes), function is body movement, not capable of spontaneous contraction
Smooth muscle
Located on walls of hollow organs, blood vessels, eyes, glands, and skin, spindle shaped, one nucleus, no striations, involuntary control, some smooth muscle is capable of spontaneous contraction. Several functions.
Cardiac muscle
In the heart, cylindrical and branched, single nucleus, has striations, in involuntary control, capable of spontaneous contraction, function is to pump blood
Skeletal muscle fibers
Cells inside each skeletal muscle
Fasciculi
Visible bundles inside the muscle.
Perimyseum
Connective tissue layer that surrounds each fasciculi
Epimysium
Connective tissue that surrounds the entire muscle
Fascia
Connective tissue sheets within the body
Muscular fascia
Contains dense irregular collagenous connective tissue. It separates individual muscles or groups of muscles. Located superficial to the epimysium
Motor neurons
Stimulate muscle to contract
Myoblasts
Multinucleated cells that muscle fibers develop from
Sarcolemma
Plasma membrane of a muscle fiber
External lamina
Deeper and thinner connective tissue of the two that are located just outside the sarcolemma.
