A basic six-dot unit framework within which each character or sign of braille is formed.
cell
The practice of writing print above or below braille to indicated the words or letters represented in braille.
interline
The part of the code that uses braille to represent the single letters of the alphabet.
uncontracted
The part of the code that uses braille cells to represent letters, combinations of letters, words, or parts of words.
contracted
A symbol or symbols created by raised dots within the braille cell. Can depict a single letter, a combination of letters, part of a word, or a whole word.
braille sign
The convention of numbering dots in the braille cell 1-6.
dot numbers
A sign having no counterpart in print, but unique to the braille code and essential to the correct interpretation of certain symbols.
indicator
A sign in braille that represents more than one letter.
contraction
A contraction that is used in braille to represent an entire word.
wordsign
Contractions containing dots in both the top and bottom rows and in both the left and right columns: and, for, of, the, with.
strong contractions
A contraction formed by the initial letter or sign of the group of letters to be contracted, preceded by the prefixes dot 5, dots 4-5, or dots 4-5-6.
initial-letter contraction
A word represented in a short form by a few significant letters from the original word.
shortform word
A contraction used to represent a group of letters within a word.
groupsign
Contractions that contain dots in both the top and bottom rows and in both right and left columns of the braille cell and stand for part of a word.
