A theme that is not stated outright but must be discerned from the details that the author includes in the work.
Implicit theme
A theme stated outright with in a work of literature.
Explicit theme
The opposition of two or more characters or forces; the three main things of this are man against a greater force, man against man, and man against himself.
Conflict
The final outcome of a story and the last element of the plot in which the major complications are explained or settled.
Resolution
The main character of a story
Protaganist
The character who is against the protagonist
Antagonist
A character who is complex and often undergoes changes in his actions and thoughts.
Round character
A character with little individu- ality whose mindset the reader knows little about.
Flat character
A character who remains essentially the same throughout the story.
Static character
A changing or developing character.
Dynamic character
Re-creates the dress, dialect, geography, social practices, and general worldview of a specific region.
Local color
Dialogue written to reflect qualities of a character’s speech.
Dialect
A person, place, thing, or idea that means something in addition to itself.
Symbol
The point of view in which the author refers to the characters as he, she, they.
3rd person point of view
The viewpoint taken by an author who tells this story in third person and who, as the storyteller, “knows all”.
